History of OGKMA

1980: 'Bees Saal Ke Baad' of Osmania Alumni from the Class of 1961 mostly and some from 1959 and 1960 as well as 1962 and 1963, included some alumni from United Kingdom met in Chicago. The meeting was organized by Dr. Kamalesh K. Reddy at the Hyatt Regency in Chicago, followed by a picnic at Dr. Raghuram Vollala's residence, where the idea of forming an alumni association originated.

1981: Dr. Janardana R. Pingili organizes the first formal meeting of OUMA in Long Island, New York. Dr. Narayan Deshmukh was elected as the first Secretary, the only office bearer and served from 1981 to 1984.

1986: Dr. Madhu Mohan, Washington, DC, Secretary from 1987-93, registers OUMA as a non-profit organization in the State of Maryland (D2707263). OUMA qualifies as a tax exempt organization under 501(C) (3). Dr. Madhu Mohan helped recruit a number of alumni and the Executive Committee of 1992 under Dr. Pushpamala Reddy, published the first edition of the OUMA Directory.

2006: The "Andhra Pradesh University of Health Sciences" was established by the Act.No. 6 of the Andhra Pradesh legislature and was inaugurated on 9-4-1986. After the death of its founder Sri N.T. Rama Rao the University was named after him as NTR University of Health Sciences, Andhra Pradesh with effect from 2.2.98 vide Act No.4 of 1998. Ever since its formation, the new University has been issuing degrees to the graduates of all three alumni medical colleges (Osmania, Gandhi, Kakatiya). Due to these changes, under the leadership of Dr. Santosh Cheela (President in office) a decision has been taken by the executive committee to change the association's name to "Osmania Gandhi Kakatiya Medical Alumni Association of America, OGKMA". This change was expected to avoid any confusion about the University that represents the medical colleges which in turn helps improve the participation of the newer medical graduates".
